The man who climbed onto the stage of a Rochester campaign event for then-Republican gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin was sentenced to three years' probation.
David Jakubonis previously pleaded guilty to approaching Zeldin at the rally in July 2022 while carrying a keychain with two sharp points and pulled Zeldin to the ground.
The man's attorney said the retired army veteran was drunk and was trying to get to the microphone.
In a statement, Zeldin said he understood Jakubonis had made personal strides over the last 17 months and hopes he continues to do so through local Veterans Affairs resources.
