The death of an incarcerated person in an upstate prison has sparked fear for those behind bars and their loved ones.

A man from inside that same facility is speaking out tonight about the abuse.

Fifteen prison workers are now on leave following last Saturday's death of Messiah Nantwi at the Mid-State Correctional Facility. A Brooklyn woman's son who is serving time there claims violence from correction officers happens every day.

He says he's been assaulted by correctional officers.

"I've been punched by these CO's, they call me a stupid ***. I'm stupid. I'm a criminal. I deserve it. All types of things. They tell me they should kill me and that I'm lucky I'm not dead," said the Brooklyn man over the phone, who asked we conceal his identity.

He adds the facility is withholding access to programs.

News 12 reached out to the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision for a response to these claims.

They directed News 12 to a 2022 report with what programs they offer.

Earlier this year, the Correctional Association of New York says it documented a list of concerns at Mid-State, including a lack of programing, security issues and assaults by staff.

"We just want to stop getting beaten. We want to do our time so our programs and go home safely," said the man serving time at the facility.
