Authorities are blaming a worker’s death inside a Rockland County cheese factory last week a “work-related accident.”
Police say they were called to the ICCO Cheese Company on Olympic Drive in Orangeburg last Tuesday after an employee spotted someone inside a mixing machine.
When investigators arrived, they found Edwin Nunez, of Paterson, New Jersey, inside the mechanism, where he was pronounced dead.
Orangetown police and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are probing the death. Authorities believe it was accidental.
Officials say the 41-year-old was an employee of the company for the past 18 months. The company specializes in grated cheeses and bread crumbs. News 12 was told the mixing machine was his assigned work station where he worked on a platform.
Police say the factory has no cameras inside. It’s unclear how he ended up in the machine.
ICCO Cheese Company officials declined to comment about Nunez’s death.
