A Mamaroneck mother has been sentenced to at least two decades in prison for murdering her young son.
Manuela Maria Morgado, 48, pleaded guilty in September. She admitted to drugging her 4-year-old son Jason "Jake" Reish, and then suffocating him with a pillow in their Mamaroneck apartment.
Morgado received 20 years to life at the White Plains County Courthouse Friday. The boy's father, Dr. Timothy Reish, spoke at the sentencing and called Morgado a "twisted monster."
The murder happened in October 2012 in the middle of a bitter custody battle with the child's father. Police say Morgado also tried to kill herself that night, but failed.
Morgado didn't speak during the sentencing in court, but her attorney read a statement: "I am riddled with shame and regret for making such a terrible decision; a very painful and costful decision that has and will haunt me for the rest of my life."
Morgado and the boy's father were allegedly fighting in court about the school the child was attending before he died.
