'Major federal investment' in Yonkers' drinking water infrastructure announced

"As our water infrastructure continues to age, it is critical that we invest in the health and safety of our residents to ensure that safe drinking water and fire protection is available to all,” said Yonkers Department of Public Works Commissioner Thomas Meier.

Federal dollars are going towards repairing the Forest Avenue water main in Yonkers.

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand made the announcement on Monday at Yonkers City Hall.

"I am proud to have secured over $1 million in federal funding to fix the critical water main breakdown at Forest Avenue, but our work isn't done. I am fighting to secure additional funding for the Midland Avenue project. This funding is essential not only to meet federal environmental standards, but also to ensure that 18,000 residents, including thousands in underserved communities, have uninterrupted water and fire protection when the city’s connection to the Lower Catskill Aqueduct goes offline for repairs," said Gillibrand.

Gillibrand says $1,092,000 has been secured in the FY26 appropriations bill to fix the Forest Avenue water main, an 8-inch main that runs beneath the Major Deegan Expressway in Yonkers at the Bronx border.

That main is about 100 years old, according to city leaders. They tell News 12 that this kind of upgrade is important and needed.

"As our water infrastructure continues to age, it is critical that we invest in the health and safety of our residents to ensure that safe drinking water and fire protection is available to all,” said Yonkers Department of Public Works Commissioner Thomas Meier.

Meier says they will be talking with an engineering firm to iron out the plans for these upgrades.
