Hundreds of people were affected by a water main break Wednesday on Elm Place in Fordham.
Environmental protection officials say they received numerous calls about water gushing at around 6:30 a.m. The street, which is between 188th Street and Fordham Road, was shut down as DEP crews worked feverishly to find the source of the leak. Crews were able to reach the pipe by early afternoon.
A total of 19 homes, two apartment buildings and three fire hydrants had to have their water shut off because of the main break, which officials say was about 4 feet under the surface. Notices were put on several homes warning residents that their water was shut off.
Con Edison crews were also on the scene to make sure gas on the block was not affected.
