The Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department is under fire for its finances.
State and local investigators are looking into the department's books after millions of dollars allegedly went missing.
Officials say the state comptroller's office, the state police and the county district attorney are looking at the possibility that $5 million went missing over a number of years either through embezzlement or misappropriation of funds.
The town of Carmel pays the fire department over $2 million a year for fire service, but Town Supervisor Ken Schmidt didn't want to discuss the investigation with News 12.
The Board of Fire Commissioners put out a statement saying it first noticed the serious financial discrepancies over the summer, and that it is working with authorities to get to the bottom of it.
