Getaway day for the Labor Day weekend is a bit of good news for drivers because gas prices are at their lowest since 2004.
An estimated 35.5 million people are expected to hit the roads and take to the air this long weekend. According to the U.S. Travel Association, Labor Day travel will generate approximately $13.5 billion in spending. The association says this will result in a spending increase of about 2 percent over last year.
It is estimated that drivers will spend an average of $270 this Labor Day weekend. Road and bridge construction in New York will be suspended until 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8. According to AAA officials, drivers should expect heavy traffic this holiday weekend since it will be busier than previous years.
With the increased traffic on the road, police are also warning drivers about the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving as part of the national 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.'
Airfare prices are also down, but fliers may not luck out with last-minute bargains due to an increase in demand.
