Long lines continued to cause headaches for hundreds at the Yonkers DMV on Monday.
The line wrapped around the corner, moving at a snail’s pace, as residents weathered wet, whipping wind and the DMV reached its capacity.
An employee tells News 12 that a combination of car registration renewals before the new year and applicants of the new Green Light Law caused the backup.
The Green Light Law took effect earlier this month allowing undocumented immigrants the right to obtain driver’s licenses.
The DMV locations in Yonkers and Peekskill are the only locations in Westchester processing Green Light applications.
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles released a statement, saying in part, "As expected, we continue to experience large crowds – and in preparation the NYS DMV added resources, like kiosks, to assist customers in the offices whose transactions can be completed online, updated our reservation system, adjusted staffing levels, and encouraged customers to use our website to prepare for their visit, which improves the wait times for everyone in the office. DMV staff also continuously walks the line of customers to make reservations for customers who were not able to complete their transaction or who want to come back at a later date, they also offer forms, and other helpful information. Customers can make reservations on our
website."
Here are some tips to avoid the lines:
You can skip the DMV if you need to renew your license, ID or registration by doing it online.
You can also make a reservation online for select DMV locations to take the written test, get a federal REAL ID and register a vehicle.
