Long Island fire departments hold recruitment events amid decline in enrollment

Westchester nonprofit receives more money to fight food insecurity
yesterdayVolunteer fire stations across Long Island are hosting open houses for the public throughout the weekend.
"It's another desperate outreach," explains Kurt Becker, of the East Meadow Fire Department.
According to the Firefighters Association of the State of New York, enrollment statewide has dropped by 40,0000 members over the past 20 years.
"We are struggling to staff fire apparatuses. It's becoming dangerous for the community," added Becker.
Fire officials say there are a number of benefits to joining, including tax breaks, college reimbursements and career advancements.
Recently, Gov. Kathy Hochul's Office invested $10 million toward the state's first training stipend program to help offset the costs of training courses for volunteer fire departments.
