Now that Black Friday has passed, the focus on savings has shifted from big retailers to mom-and-pop shops for Small Business Saturday.
American Express started the day nationwide in 2010 to lure customers away from big box stores. Gov. Cuomo proclaimed the day in New York to encourage shoppers to visit and support local retailers.
The U.S. Small Business Association says New York state has more than 57,000 small businesses, which employ more than 350,000 workers.
Julia Rozenfeld is the owner of LOL Kids Armonk, a children's boutique clothing shop that offered 30 percent off for Small Business Saturday. She says more than one-third of her yearly revenue depends on her sales during this stretch of the holiday shopping season.
Residents told News 12 that they prefer shopping in the area that they live in and supporting local businesses.
