Local leaders are calling on the owners of a Glen Cove shopping center to lease the space currently occupied by King Kullen to another supermarket. 

Assemblymember Charles Lavine and state Sen. Anna Kaplan wrote a letter to the property owner, expressing concern that the closure will limit options for local residents to get their groceries.

The letter said in part, "We write to express the hope that you will rent this space to another supermarket. Otherwise, Glen Cove will be left with only one major supermarket. As a city, Glen Cove has an urban demographic presenting the need for meaningful choices of markets providing fresh quality food."

The politicians went on to say that the city of Glen Cove is experiencing an influx of new residents with the opening of several large residentials developments in nearby Village Square and Garvies Point, which would support the existence of two full-service grocery store options in the area.

The King Kullen in Glen Cove is set to close on July 28. Another King Kullen in Franklin Square will close on July 14.
