The Town of Rye kicked off Pride Month by raising the pride flag above Crawford Park on Saturday.
Members of the LGBTQ and town representatives gathered at the park to lift the rainbow flag. They say they are taking a stand in displaying the diversity that exists in the community.
Amanda Timchak, of pRYEde Community Group, says this is a first step in the right direction for the town.
"I think this is a very exciting day, the raising of the pride flag shows that our community is accepting, is inclusive,” Timchak says. “It's a signal to the kids and adults in our community that everyone is welcome here."
Town Supervisor Gary Zuckerman says that hate and prejudice have no place in the community.
Another ceremony will be held at Rye Town Park.
