Spend the day outdoors learning and playing with the friendliest animals at the Greenburgh Nature Center on this week’s Road Trip: Close to Home.
The Greenburgh Nature Center is a nonprofit organization in Westchester County located on 33 acres in Scarsdale and runs educational programs 365 days a year.
With a reservation, you can make new furry friends at their “Back to Nature” program. And if you get there early, you can take part in the "Barnyard Opening" where you'll learn how these animals kick start their days. “We get to go to the barnyard, open up the doors, let the sheep and the goats out and feed everybody breakfast,” says Greg Wechgelaer, director of naturalist education.
But there is much more. “We leash them up and take them on a walk in the woods. We get them to do tricks. We feed them a bunch of snacks, so it’s really a great time for the family to come and enjoy being outside and interacting with the animals,” says Wechgelaer.
Then you can take your adventure to new heights as you learn more about birds of prey. “We have native gray horns and screech owls here in our forest so if you’re lucky maybe you’ll see them and hear them call, so we bring people on walks for those programs.”
Plus cozy up with some of the softest winter animals, like a chinchilla, and learn how they adapt to the cold.  “This place is a perfect place to come when you’re stuck inside all day...come out, enjoy a nature walk on our trail, visit our animals.”
