Federal and local leaders on Wednesday demanded a full investigation following a report that a Rye Brook dam was targeted by Iranian hackers in 2013.

On Monday, the Wall Street Journal detailed a thwarted cyberattack by Iranian hackers that aimed to gain control of the water supply by breaking into the county's computer system. If the attack was successful, it could have caused an explosion, a flood or a traffic jam.

Sen. Charles Schumer and Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino said they only learned about the attack a few days ago.

"Why did they pick this one? Were they practicing? Are they preparing for something larger? We need answers to these questions," said Schumer.

Astorino added that he didn't understand why the federal government would keep the information from him. He said his office is conducting an independent investigation into what happened while they wait for Homeland Security to explain why Westchester was left in the dark.

The Bowman Avenue Dam sits on the Rye Brook-Port Chester border.
