Hundreds of mourners gathered Saturday to pay their final respects to John Burke, the Woodbury town supervisor who died suddenly this week.
The beloved official and father of six died Tuesday at the age of 73 after suffering complications from a surgery at Westchester Medical Center.
Burke was elected town supervisor in 2005. The popular Democrat was known as an effective budgeter and someone who made numerous improvements to public facilities, including the town's pool.
Many in the community say Burke will also be remembered for his years as an educator. He served as the principal of Nanuet Senior High School for 23 years, and the school now bears his name.
Funeral services were held at St. Patrick's Church in Highland Mills.
