A pothole turned into a large sinkhole Saturday night and temporarily shut down part of Route 59 in Airmont.

Officials say the road had to be closed between Brookside and Campbell avenues due to the hole expanding.

Highway department crews were called to the scene and began repairs. The roadway was reopened by 11:55 p.m.
