A full-scale emergency drill took over Rye Playland, simulating a plane crash into a nearby lake and testing how first responders would handle a mass-casualty incident.
Westchester County police, airport emergency crews and firefighters from Port Chester were among the agencies participating in the exercise. The drill is required by the Federal Aviation Administration, which mandates airports like Westchester County Airport regularly practice large-scale emergency response scenarios.
Officials say the goal is to ensure coordination between multiple agencies during high-pressure situations. Volunteers acted as victims with simulated injuries, while mannequins were used to help crews practice triage, rescue, treatment and recovery efforts.
Emergency leaders say exercises like this help ensure responders are fully prepared before a real disaster strikes.
The drill involved more than 100 participants and 10 local agencies.
