A Larchmont man was among those on hand as lifelong benefits became a reality for first responders sickened at ground zero on 9/11.

President Donald Trump signed the bill to make sure the Victim Compensation Fund for those suffering from the effects of 9/11 never runs out. In the crowd was first responder Matt McCauley.

"There was a feeling of completion, but at the same time it's bittersweet feeling of completion because people keep getting sick," says McCauley

The Larchmont resident and retired NYPD officer made more than a dozen trips to the Capitol with other first responders who pushed for months to extend the fund.

"The frustrating thing was they had to they had to come in and talk to Congress and stick their hat out and say, 'Look we need help,'" says McCauley.

After much urging, Congress did pass the bill earlier this month. But McCauley says his work is not done.

"We can never forget as a country, because people all around us in Westchester have given up all their time, their lives. They deserve to be remembered," says McCauley.
