To celebrate National Poetry Month, last night, members of the community sang and read poetry at the Mount Vernon Library.
The "Power of Poetry" event welcomed both adults and children to share original work with the community.
Organizer of the event, Malinda Daniel Hodge, says that poetry is a positive outlet for people, especially children, who have trouble expressing their feelings.
"When a child can't verbally talk about it, they can write it down and they hear their words through someone else speaking or singing," said Hodge. "It's a form of meditation, healing and an outlet."
