Homeowners have taken to the streets to protest the possible expansion of a CVS pharmacy in Katonah.
They are asking lawmakers to rewrite zoning laws to stop the popular drug store in its tracks.
Residents in the hamlet say they take pride in its quaintness, including the many independent mom-and-pop shops that line downtown. They say they were unhappy when the CVS moved into the Katonah Shopping Center.
Business owners who didn't want to go on camera say that the landlord wants to move the CVS from the end of the shopping plaza to the middle, which will double its size and create a nearly 7,000-square-foot "megastore." They say it could leave the future of their shops up in the air.
Community activists staged a protest against the move over the weekend and collected more than 1,000 signatures online.
Councilman Don Scott says they are now considering a new law that limits the size of any business in the Katonah to just 4,000 feet.
A public meeting on the matter is scheduled for next month.
