296ds agoThe Catskills region known as “The Borscht Belt” was a famous family vacation spot for decades, as well as the setting of the 1987 film “Dirty Dancing.” It has also been home to many treasured memories.
Author and photographer Marisa Scheinfeld fears it is in danger of being forgotten.
While completing her 2016 book “The Borscht Belt: Revisiting the Remains of America's Jewish Vacationland,” she was shocked to discover that nearly half of the area was being “demolished, repurposed and turned into something else.”
"The importance of a museum has…been further highlighted," said Scheinfeld. “I felt time was of the essence.”
To prevent the historic site from being lost in history, she joined a group hoping to launch a museum about Catskills and The Borscht Belt in Ellenville by next year.
