What would you do if your monthly utility bill said you owe hundreds of dollars to a company you’ve never heard of? It’s called “slamming."
News 12’s senior investigative reporter Walt Kane has some advice on what you can do if it happens to you.

How to avoid getting burned by a third-party energy provider:

  • Research the company’s complaint history with your state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Check out the company’s rates: They should be posted on their website. Make sure they’re actually cheaper.
  • Find out if the rate is fixed or variable. Variable rates can change each month, sometimes by a lot.
