Jury selection began in the retrial of a Putnam County man accused in the 1994 murder of a 12-year-old girl.
Andrew Krivak spent 24 years in prison until his release on bail in 2020 after his conviction was overturned.
Krivak and Anthony DiPippo were convicted of the rape and murder of 12-year-old Josette Wright, whose remains were discovered in Paterson in 1995.
Both maintained their innocence, despite a confession from Andrew Krivak that he claims was coerced. Krivak was not granted a retrial at the time based on that confession.
DiPippo was acquitted in 2016 after his third trial and settled a lawsuit with the county for $12 million.
In May 2019, a judge overturned Krivak's conviction and an appellate court upheld the dismissal.
Krivak's attorneys tried to get the Putnam County DA's Office to completely drop the charges, but prosecutors say they have enough evidence for a retrial.
