Surfing on the East Coast is said to have officially started in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina in 1905, however, there's evidence that suggests history may be wrong.
It has to do with a drawing that showed up in a newspaper on Aug. 18, 1888. The caption read "Asbury Park surprised by the daring of a Sandwich Island girl." Sandwich Island was the old-time name of Hawaii.
People have researched who the girl was and now there's compelling evidence that she was a real person. So, the theory now is that surfing on the East Coast began in New Jersey in 1888, not North Carolina 17 years later.
