JCC of Mid-Westchester holds candlelight ceremony to observe anniversary of pandemic declaration
The community came together for the candlelight ceremony to remember, reflect and acknowledge how difficult the last year has been - as well as to honor those who lost their lives to COVID-19.

298ds agoThe JCC of Mid-Westchester in Scarsdale observed the one-year anniversary of when COVID-19 was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization.
That designation means the virus became widespread across the globe.
In this past year, more than 29 million COVID-19 cases have been reported here in the U.S. and more than 529,000 people have died
The community came together for the candlelight ceremony to remember, reflect and acknowledge how difficult the last year has been - as well as to honor those who lost their lives to COVID-19.
Lauren Klein, says her mother, Catherine Klein, was a 31-year employee at the JCC who lost her life to COVID-19.
“She loved being around the young students and they brought her such joy,” she said.
The JCC said Klein was a cherished employee, and she will be missed.
The JCC shut down one year ago today, and it was months before it was able to reopen and serve the community again.
The community lit candles Thursday and acknowledged that the tragedy of COVID-19 brought them closer together.
They praised members of the National Guard for their effort in getting the community center back open.
