Students at Iona University say Friday morning's 4.8 magnitude earthquake woke them up, with some tumbling out of their beds.
Two Iona faculty staff members told News 12 they thought it was a truck driving by when they felt the ground shake. One member said instinct kicked in and prompted her to go under her desk.
A massive tree came down on Cortlandt Avene right after the earthquake. The News 12 Storm Watch Team said this week's torrential rains possibly contributed to the tree toppling over.
There were no reported injuries.
Students and staff in Mount Vernon said they tried to remain calm throughout the incident. They also said they took the opportunity to turn it into a science lesson.
