Irvington Democrat David Imamura has made history as the first Asian American to win a seat on the Westchester County Board of Legislators.

Imamura declared victory on Tuesday after the polls closed following his uncontested race for the board's 12th District seat.

He replaces MaryJane Shimsky who vacated her spot on the board this year after winning a seat in the 92nd state Assembly District.

Imamura is a lifelong Westchester resident, attorney, and Chair of the Westchester Asian American Advisory Board. He stepped down as the Chair of the state's Independent Redistricting Commission last November to run for a spot on the board.

His campaign focused on affordable housing, environmental sustainability, and more efficient public transportation for county residents.

The 12th District represents about 60,000 people in Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Edgemont, Hartsdale, Hastings-on-Hudson and Irvington.

There are roughly 42,150 eligible voters in this district but only 295 voted early (.7%) and day-of voting might not break one thousand ballots, according to commissioners at the Westchester Board of Elections.

Imamura will fill out the remainder of Shimsky's seat which expires with the rest of the board at the end of this year. He could be forced to run another campaign as early as this June if he faces a Democratic primary or this November if he faces a Republican challenger. 
 
Imamura will join the board once the election is certified. He has a swearing in ceremony scheduled for March 19 at the Greenburgh Public Library.
