Investigators say the Nyack house in which a woman died during a fire Tuesday had a number of safety code violations.
They say the single-family home at 3 Waldron Ave. was illegally divided into four apartments with 14 residents in total. There were two illegal apartments in the basement, and a picture appeared to show a boiler in one of the bedrooms. There was an apartment on the main floor and another illegal unit upstairs.
On Tuesday, a woman believed to be the homeowner's wife died as flames tore through the home. She was identified as 61-year-old Jarnail Kaur.
The homeowner could face charges contingent on the outcome of a conversation between Rockland County Executive Ed Day and the district attorney.
Rockland has been cracking down on landlords renting illegal apartments. Officials believe there could be hundreds of other people living in unsafe conditions.
