Some pet owners struggling as inflation soars have had to surrender their animals to shelters.
Shelter managers told News 12 it's becoming so common that they're often running out of space.
"Any of our smaller dogs people call us every day wanting to surrender their animal,” said Julie Skellenger, manager of Kiya Koda Humane Society.
Pet owners have also come in search of help with food and vet costs.
Animal rescue experts say pet owners struggle when the economy turns. Shelters are also having a tough time keeping up with costs themselves.
