Communities across the Hudson Valley marked Independence Day with patriotic celebrations, ceremonies and traditions honoring the nation’s founding.

In Bedford, residents gathered at three locations throughout the village for a public reading of the Declaration of Independence, a longstanding Fourth of July tradition. Bedford Town Supervisor Ellen Calves joined community members in reading the historic document aloud, beginning with its famous opening words.

For many in attendance, the celebration was about more than history. It was also an opportunity to reflect on the country’s continued pursuit of its founding ideals.

“Gratitude for our founding fathers, gratitude for our veterans, gratitude for everybody that made America what it is today,” said Bedford resident Benjamin Trotta. “Although it is not finished yet, to help complete the American story, help to fulfill the American dream.”

Similar Independence Day celebrations were held throughout the region, including in Mount Vernon and Yonkers, as families gathered to celebrate America’s 250th birthday weekend.

Festivities continue throughout the day, with fireworks displays scheduled across the Hudson Valley later this evening.
