A former police officer who says he is now gravely ill from working at Ground Zero is still locked in a battle for benefits 10 years later.
Charlie Wassil, a former Peekskill police officer, is now a paraplegic and lives in a nursing home. Because his mail is only delivered once a week, he missed a deadline in 2010 to get his portion of a federal lawsuit.
Wassil says calls made to his lawyers have gone unreturned and when he reached out to officials in Washington, D.C., all he was told is that he missed the deadline.
