Nationwide immigration raids began Sunday in several major cities, including in New York.
President Donald Trump confirmed Friday that Sunday would be the day Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents would begin actively detaining undocumented immigrants across the country, including New York City.
Trump says immigration agents will specifically be looking for "bad players," but he says they'll also be targeting others who have come into the country illegally.
ICE officials say they are focusing the raids on 2,000 undocumented immigrant families who have orders of deportation.
Acting ICE Director, Matt Albence, defended the agencies' actions during an interview with Fox News.
"We went above and beyond in this circumstance and gave those individuals back in February an opportunity to turn themselves in to arrange for an orderly process to be removed from the country," Albence told Fox News.
Neither Trump or ICE officials have given specific details on the timing of the raids.
The ACLU says if ICE agents show up at your door, you do not have to let them in if they don't have a warrant. You are also allowed to ask for an interpreter if you need one, and you have the right to remain silent.
Immigrant activist Luis Yumvla says so far, he hasn't seen ICE agents around Port Chester.
"We're trying to send a message to our community to be calm and don't worry about it, that's not going to happen," Yumvla said.
He says the police chief said they haven't heard anything about ICE coming to their town.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo called Trump's announcement of ICE raids across the country politically motivated, despicable and inhumane.
