The super crane that will help build the new Tappan Zee Bridge could start working on construction as early as next week.
The crane, named "I Lift New York," is the size of a 30-story building and has a lifting capacity of 1,900 tons. It took six weeks for the crane to travel from California to New Jersey, via the Panama Canal. While in New Jersey, it underwent nine months of upgrades.
Special Advisor to Gov. Cuomo Brian Conybeare says the crane will help tear the old bridge down before building the new one. Conybeare says it will also speed up construction and cut costs by almost $1 billion.
The crane will be lowered and moved to the northside of the bridge Wednesday afternoon.
