Hurricane season is now underway, and emergency response officials urge everyone to be prepared in case of disaster.
Residents across the Hudson Valley know all too well the destructive path storms leave behind after Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Irene hit the region.
Federal authorities say it is every citizen's responsibility to be prepared for emergencies. They urge each person to have a plan ahead of time before any storm hits.
Other tips include stocking up on emergency supplies for your car or home, including batteries, canned food, flashlights and a battery-powered radio. Emergency numbers should be ready and programed into your cellphone. People should have a fire extinguisher ready and make sure everyone in the home knows how to use it.
Another bit of advice is that everyone should have a "to go" bag in case of any emergency. If you are in a hurricane-prone area, know where your nearest shelter is and also know different ways to get out of your neighborhood and to safety.
