While it may seem like the warm weather has just returned, it's almost hurricane season and residents are being urged to be prepared.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has declared this "Hurricane Preparedness Week" in New York. It's a reminder to get a family emergency plan in place.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins Sunday, June 1 and ends Nov. 30.

The National Weather Service says that a lack of hurricane awareness and preparation are common threads among all major hurricane disasters. They say by knowing what actions you should take, you can reduce the effects of a hurricane disaster. Hurricanes like Irene and Sandy can create hazards such as storm surge, heavy rainfall, inland flooding, high winds, tornadoes and rip currents.
