Hundreds of pieces of mail discovered in New Rochelle dumpster
An investigation is underway at the New Rochelle post office after hundreds of pieces of mail were discovered in a dumpster.
New Rochelle homeowner Aurora Reddy says she has been waiting 10 days for mail that hasn't come yet, and she fears she may have to pay a price for the post office's mistakes.
“These are things that I have to pay for, taxes from Puerto Rico, and then they will charge me with penalties.. it’s unbelievable,” she says.
Reddy isn’t the only person complaining. The post office has been hearing from a lot of residents after a dumpster full of mail was discovered behind the post office.
Post office officials say they are aware of the mail found in the dumpster and that it is under investigation by the Office of the Inspector General. They insist just about all the mail found there was advertisements that couldn't be mailed to customers.
Longtime homeowner Donna Bergin isn't buying the excuses from the post office. She insists she sent out checks that somehow got lost in the mail and now she's worried she could be a potential target for identity theft.
Bergin filed a formal complaint and blames the postal workers for not doing the job that their customers deserved.
Post office officials are recommending that anyone who's had issues with their mail call them at 1-800-ASK-USPS.
