The sound of bagpipes filled the air in Yonkers today for a police lieutenant who is now among the fallen heroes of Sept. 11.
Hundreds of family, friends and fellow officers bid a final farewell today to Lt. Roy McLaughlin at St. John the Baptist Church in Yonkers.
In McLaughlin's eulogy, his 14-year-old son said he deserves his own day.
McLaughlin, a 17-year veteran of the Yonkers Police Department, was one of the first officers to respond to Ground Zero and help with the search and recovery efforts.
About 10 years later, the father of four was diagnosed with stage 3 brain cancer. The 38-year-old succumbed to the disease last Thursday, the eve of the 14th anniversary of 9/11.
His family is asking that donations be made to the National Brain Tumor Society.
As a special tribute, a police helicopter flew over the church after the funeral.
