Hundreds of people gathered in Orange County Monday to attend the wake of a Crawford police sergeant who suddenly died on the job.
Town of Crawford Police Sgt. Eric Meier, 51, died last Thursday after suffering an apparent heart attack while on duty. Officials say Meier was combing a wooded area for reported marijuana plants during an investigation when he collapsed.
Wake services for Meier were held at William Gagan Funeral Home in Pine Bush. The 25-year veteran was remembered by his fellow officers as a man dedicated to his job, and as someone always there for others.
Flags around town were flown at half-staff in honor of Meier, and a purple and black bunting adorns the Crawford police station.
Meier's funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, also at William Gagan Funeral Home.
