The Humane Society of Westchester broke ground on a multimillion-dollar renovation project that will help more furry friends find forever homes.

Shelter officials and local elected leaders were on hand to put shovels in the ground on the $4 million project to modernize the facility for the future.

The current shelter is about 7,000 square feet and the renovation will almost double its size. The shelter serves 20 communities in southern and central Westchester and rescues more than 500 dogs and 900 cats each year.

Shelter officials say the new expanded space will allow them to serve the animals and communities better.

“It’s going to enable us to find more homes for our animals quicker and easier. It’s going to increase our space to do animal education,” says Dana Rocco, shelter manager.

The renovation project is expected take six to nine months to complete.

Dog lover and Westchester Assemblywoman Amy Paulin says she vows to work with her colleagues in Albany to help raise the funds for the renovation project.
