People lined up across the Hudson Valley Thursday to prepay their taxes ahead of the new federal tax plan that will be taking effect on New Year's Day.
Residents say they were looking to get ahead of next year's federal income tax changes that cap property tax write-offs at $10,000 – well-below what many people in the Hudson Valley pay.
President Donald Trump signed the law last week, prompting Gov. Andrew Cuomo to issue an emergency executive order allowing taxpayers to pay early.
The IRS announced Wednesday that those prepayments can be written off as long as the property's assessment was finalized this year.
Many municipalities are also allowing taxpayers to prepay online. Anyone who prefers to mail in their payments is urged to make sure it's postmarked before the end of the year.
