A historic home in Newburgh was badly damaged in a fire Wednesday morning.

Fire officials say the second and third floors of the home located at 420 Grand St. were fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived around 2:30 a.m.

Firefighters say it took more than two hours to put out the fire, and that extensive fire and water damage has made the home unlivable.

The 8,000-square-foot stone mansion was originally built for a member of the Astor family and was once home to famous hatmaker L.B. Kidd.

Authorities say the homeowners, a husband and wife, were inside when the fire began but managed to get out.

The couple, originally from Brooklyn, told News 12 they bought the eight-bedroom, four-bathroom home three years ago with plans to restore it.

Authorities say the home had no working smoke detectors.
