A nearly century-old Bronx landmark is preparing for a new chapter.

The historic Loew’s Paradise Theatre on the Grand Concourse is being reimagined, with plans to restore the iconic venue and transform it into a nonprofit performing arts center that will host music, film, educational programming and community events.

Walking into the theater, visitors are immediately transported back in time. Much of the building’s original character remains intact, from its grand staircase to vintage light fixtures and even original exit signs dating back to 1929.

“It is very magical. It’s 4,000 seats and the stage is huge,” said Hannah Celeste. “It feels like you're going back in time.”

Now, the team behind the project says the goal is to breathe new life into the historic space while preserving its rich history.

“When the opportunity came to be in the Bronx, to have this as part of the community restored, our plan is to restore it to 1929 condition,” said Peter Martin.

The theater’s future operators envision the venue as a cultural hub for the borough, filling a void they say has existed for decades.

“The Bronx has no performing arts center. The Bronx needs it,” said Charles Piazza.

Plans for the revitalized Paradise include concerts, film screenings, educational programs, graduations, and community gatherings. Organizers say they also hope the center will attract visitors from outside the borough while ensuring local residents play a key role in shaping its programming.

“There’s a lot of opportunities to bring people to the Bronx and for the Bronx community to be doing a lot of the programming here as well,” Martin said.

The vision extends beyond the theater itself. Proposed additions include a rooftop film series, a restaurant and bar overlooking the Grand Concourse, and other amenities designed to make the destination active year-round.

“We’re happy to donate the space for various community events. We’d love to work with the community,” Martin added.

Project leaders plan to unveil more details about the redevelopment on Nov. 10, with some programming expected to begin while restoration work is still underway.

Their long-term goal is to complete the full transformation in time for the theater’s 100th anniversary in 2029.

“We want to make it a world-class performing arts center,” Martin said. “So, the Bronx will have one of the best performing arts centers, along with the second-largest theater in New York state as well.”
