Historic Cortlandt Manor school shuts down after unexpected loss of students
According to school officials with the New York Archdiocese, the decision follows what they called a significant and unexpected decline in enrollment for next school year.
A longtime elementary school has closed its doors after an unexpected decline in enrollment.
St. Columbanus Catholic School in Cortlandt Manor has shut down after serving students since 1957.
Officials with the Archdiocese of New York say the closure was not planned. They say a significant and sudden drop in enrollment for the upcoming school year made it too difficult to continue operations.
School leaders say families and staff had worked throughout the year to strengthen enrollment.
However, a number of families recently informed the school they would not be returning next year.
Officials say that loss ultimately forced the decision to close.
Students will now have the option to enroll at nearby Catholic schools, including St. Augustine School in Ossining and St. Patrick School in Yorktown Heights.
The Archdiocese says a transition team is in place to help families with enrollment and next steps.
Officials also say families who have already paid registration fees for next year will receive full refunds.
