After a determined two-year campaign, the Hispanic heritage flag now flies proudly over Broadway in Newburgh, marking a historic moment for the city’s Latino community.

Local advocate Dale Valazquez led the charge to have the flag displayed during Hispanic Heritage Month, and on Friday, her efforts came to fruition.

The flag was raised in a public ceremony, symbolizing unity, pride and the rich cultural contributions of Hispanic residents in Newburgh.

“I am so glad it came to fruition,” Valazquez said, reflecting on the long journey to recognition.

The flag’s presence is more than symbolic it represents the achievements and heritage of Hispanic people across the region. “It’s for the achievements of all Hispanic people,” Vasquez said. “It’s a long time coming and it deserves to be represented.”

City officials confirmed that the flag was funded by the municipality and will now be flown annually during Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.

The moment marks a significant step forward in celebrating and honoring the diverse cultures that shape Newburgh’s identity.
