The community is stepping in to help those impacted by a large fire inside an apartment building in Yonkers.

“It was definitely a very insane and scary moment. It was really smoky, you could smell it, taste it," said Matthew Franklin, who lives in the building.

The fire happened Tuesday morning at 50 Riverdale Ave.

Emergency crews believe the fire started on the sixth floor. They're still looking into a cause. The damage to a number of apartments is significant.

“A lot of people lost everything," said Yonkers City Councilwoman Deana Norman.

A donation drive is underway at Yonkers City Hall to help those families.

“Our priority is to make sure those fire victims, that we’re able to help them in anyway possible," said Hope Hollinsworth-Coaxum, the director of Yonkers constituent services and minority affairs.

You can drop off new items like clothes, hygiene products, baby supplies, even pet food.

“When it’s one of our own, we stick together and we band together to help those in need," says Yonkers City Council President Lakisha Collins-Bellamy.

That donation drive at city hall is happening through May 13.
