While there are no confirmed cases of Ebola in New York, local hospitals are preparing themselves in case of an outbreak.
However, health officials say they need more money to train their staffs for public health emergencies.
Rep. Nita Lowey (D) and area hospital chief medical officers met today at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla to discuss how much money is needed to fight infectious diseases such as Ebola and to ensure consistency of procedures.
The chief medical officer of Nyack Hospital says they need between $200,000 and $500,000 just for isolation in the emergency department until initial diagnosis. The numbers vary depending on the medical facility.
However, health officials say they are already using extra training and equipment.
While professionals figure out how much money is needed, some patients at Westchester Medical Center say they already see a difference in staff procedures.
Jack Malick, who goes to the hospital for weekly heart treatments, says he notices that the hospital has been very careful in taking people's temperatures.
Hospitals leaders also say they have equipped all entryways with information kiosks on Ebola as well as more face masks.
