The Putnam County Health Department is alerting residents that a rabid raccoon turned up in the area.
The sick raccoon made an appearance Tuesday at the Putnam Plaza Shopping Center. Tests determined that the animal had rabies. The county's health department is now circulating flyers as a warning.
"If someone had contact and was bitten by the animal, we want to make sure the person receives the appropriate treatment for rabies exposure," says Sean Rogen, of the Health Department.
Earlier this month, a rabid fox attacked a Mahopac mom, chasing her into her home with her children. Putnam County Health officials say this latest case is the 10th rabid animal discovered in the county this year.
They say the best thing to do is leave wildlife alone.
Those who may have come in contact with the rabid raccoon are asked to call the Putnam County Health Department at 845-808-1390.
