An inmate at a federal prison in Orange County has been charged with murdering another inmate. Daniel Smith has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Patrick Deck, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Authorities say Smith murdered Deck at the federal facility in Otisville three years ago. Smith was in prison for second-degree murder, while Deck was in for child pornography. If convicted, Smith could face the death penalty.
A sex offender has been sentenced to 15 years behind bars after facing federal charges from a predator sting in Rockland County. Federal officials say Brian Reed of New Jersey thought he was speaking with a 13-year-old girl online, but it was actually an undercover investigator with the district attorney's office. Reed asked the girl to send him sexual photos and to meet him for sex. Reed pleaded guilty to attempted enticement of a minor this past October.
A retail theft ring has been busted in the Town of Poughkeepsie. Police say last Friday, three suspects tried to buy more than $1,200 of Home Depot merchandise at the location on North Road with counterfeit money. Police say one of the suspects was caught stealing some of the merchandise. The three face separate charges, including grand larceny. They were arraigned in Poughkeepsie Justice Court.
