Here are some stories making headlines across the Hudson Valley.
A
20-year-old Middletown woman has pleaded guilty in the death of a Middletown
high school student. Chelsea
Johnson admitted to fatally stabbing 17-year-old Roy Boyd back in January.
The incident
escalated after Johnson's ex-boyfriend went to her house to pick up his
belongings. Boyd was accompanying the victim when an argument broke out. That's
when Johnson fatally stabbed Boyd in the neck. Johnson faces up to 18 years in prison when she is
sentenced on Jan. 25.
State
police have released new information on an incident in which a man barricaded
himself inside his Wappinger home over the weekend. Officials say troopers responded to the home on Cooper Road Saturday morning
for a welfare check. They talked to 44-year-old Jerry Ford,
but he eventually became uncooperative, went inside his home, and
grabbed what appeared to be a firearm. Officials say he aimed the firearm at officers
before going back inside the home. Ford was arrested and charged with menacing,
though the weapon turned out to be a BB gun rifle. Ford is due back in court
later this month.
More than
82,000 people have filed sex abuse claims against the Boy Scouts of America,
according to the New York Times. Victim lawyers say the claims far outnumber the
accusations against the American Catholic Church. The organization
filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection back in February, saying it
plans to use the process to establish a compensation fund for abuse victims.
Those claims will now be vetted.
